As part of its global humanitarian mission, the World Heart Foundation has embarked on a series of projects to establish and improve education and training programs in host programs and countries. A model standardized six-year Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program has been established at Shanghai Chest Hospital in Shanghai, China. |
| A. Thomas Pezzella MD, the director of special projects for the World Heart Foundation, is in China for one year implementing this program. Four residents began their training August 1st. Modeled after the new American and Canadian six-year program, and modified for China, it is hoped that this program will be used as a model and adopted by other centers in China. At the national level, a graduate medical education system is still evolving. Professor Yingze Li, the Vice President and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Shanghai Chest Hospital and program director for this project, addressed The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting in January 2005. | ![]() Thomas Pezzella Assists New Resident at Shanghai Chest Hospital |
